Australia 2020 - resilience, smart cities and the built environment

Adam Beck will be sharing with Rafi Rich and us a range of reflections on the year that has been 2020 in Australia. An environmental and social crisis in what was an extreme bushfire season, followed by the global health pandemic and economic crisis that is COVID-19. What is the role and the connections between resilience, smart cities and the built environment.

Adam Beck  is an urbanist who has worked for private sector consultancies and leading global non-government organisations to advance sustainable community outcomes for the past 25 years. Executive Director, Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand Secretariat, Centre for Data Leadership As Executive Director with the Smart Cities Council, he works with the world’s longest running smart cities organisation focussed on catalysing investment in technology and data to accelerate liveability, workability and sustainability. Prior to this Adam was Director of Innovation at EcoDistricts, where developed a collaborative governance model for urban regeneration across North America and beyond. Adam was also Executive Director at the Green Building Council of Australia where is facilitated the creation of the Green Star Communities certification system for sustainable urban development.

Arch. Rafi Rich is the CEO and Co-founder of SUiTS, Smarter Urban IT & Strategies & the MIdCityLabs. Rich has spent the past 20 years promoting urban innovation, resilience & sustainability with cities, governments and organizations in Israel, Europe & Africa, through a synergy between technology, policy, governance & community engagement, aimed at sustainable inclusive & resilient cities In 2007 he was appointed as UNHABITATs smart city consultant, leading the development of Africa’s first national smart city master plan for Rwanda.
Rich is a Senior lecturer for urban strategies & smart cities at the Technion Institute of technology and Formaly, he was the senior director for building in the Israeli Ministry of Interior, & the Founder of the Israeli Green Building council.
